    Acne Vulgaris or pimples is an inflammatory skin disease in which the pilosebaceous follicles become oversensitive to normal levels of testosterone.

    Main factors in pathogenesis are:

  • Increased sebum secretion
  • Irritation of the hair follicles of the skin due to irregular shedding of dead cells(follicular hyperkeratosis)resulting in blackheads and whiteheads.
  • Building up of bacteria

    Acne or pimples occur when there is plugging of hair follicles with oil and dead cells. Each hair follicle is connected to an oil gland or sebaceous gland. These glands secrete sebum which act as a lubricant for your skin and hair. When the body produces excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells, they accumulate in the hair follicle and cause acne.

  • HORMONAL - Acne worsens in premenstrual period. Acne is more common during puberty.

  • Neurodermatitis results from persistent scratching and rubbing of skin. It could be a mechanical or chemical irritation or due to allergic contact dermatitis.

    PSORIASIS

    Psoriasis is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory skin disease of unknown origin characterized by circumscribed red, dry plaques covered with mica like scales or silvery scales. It is an autoimmune disease with genetic predisposition.

    Attacks of psoriasis can be aggravated by stress, infection(streptococcal),pregnancy, trauma, drugs such as chloroquine, antimalarials, alcohol, tobacco smoking. It is a disease of remissions and relapse.

    PATHOGENESIS

    It is an autoimmune disease. In psoriasis, new cells are formed faster and the excess new cells accumulate in the form of flakes.

    The skin cells are formed at a very rapid rate but old cells are not shed. Whenever there is a wound, the skin cells are produced at a faster rate to heal the wound. In psoriasis in spite of no wound, the skin cells are formed at a rapid rate.
    The most common sites are scalp. elbows, knees, and sacrum.

  • WARTS

    Warts are epidermal outgrowths(skin outgrowths) caused due to infection of the skin and mucous membranes with HPV(human papilloma virus). They are contagious in nature. They can affect any part of the body.

    Types of warts:

  • Verruca Plana or Juvenile Warts : They are seen in children usually on the back of the hands or on the face .They are smooth, small, flat topped papules of skin color.
  • Verruca Vulgaris :These affect any part of the body especially the hands and feet. The surface is rough and they are firm in consistency and non tender.
  • Plantar and palmer warts : They occur on the soles of the feet or on the palms. They have a tendency to grow inward. They are flat due to pressure.
